What to Wear for your Maternity Session?

If picking an outfit for your maternity session feels like one more decision on an already full plate, take a breath..

First, you don't have to buy a thing

My studio keeps a wardrobe of more than 70 maternity gowns, sized and styled for every person flowing chiffons, fitted knits, soft neutrals, and deep jewel tones. You'll try on whatever catches your eye, and we'll guide the fit so it flatters your shape and your stage of pregnancy. So the honest first answer to what to wear for maternity photos is often simple: come as you are. I've got the rest covered.

If you'd love to bring your own

Absolutely, let's work together to figure out what will make the best photographs:

  • Color: soft, timeless tones win; cream, blush, sage, dusty blue, and my signature deep burgundy. Rich solids read more elegant on camera than busy prints.
  • Fit: choose form-fitting to celebrate the bump, or flowing for movement and drama.
  • Fabric: anything that drapes. Chiffon, jersey, and soft knits catch light and movement; stiff or boxy fabrics fight the camera. Discuss options with me and we'll choose what fits you together.

In the studio

A clean, neutral backdrop lets color do the work, so this is the place for a rich jewel-tone gown or a fitted bodysuit. Because the whole wardrobe is right here, you can try more than one look in a single session from something dramatic and floor-length, to something soft and simple without ever packing a bag. Textured pieces like lace, ribbed knits, and fine pleats add beautiful depth against a plain wall, and I'll help you read the light so we know exactly which fabrics glow.

The studio is warm, private, and yours for the session, so you can move and change with help on hand whenever you'd like. Keep accessories simple. Barefoot or a simple heel both photograph beautifully. If your partner is joining, a simple shirt in a coordinating tone keeps the focus right where it belongs, on the two of you and your little one-to-be.

Outdoors around Seattle

Long gowns in earthy or pastel tones move gorgeously in the breeze and glow at golden hour against the evergreens. Dress in easy layers, weather changes its mind often. Bring fabrics that love a little wind. We'll work together to find the best attire for the location, but outside the studio, we won't have access to my wardrobe.

A few things to leave in the closet

  • Large logos and graphics, that distract the focus away from you.
  • Tight stripes and busy patterns that shimmer on camera.
  • Neon or very bright synthetic colors can cast a colored tint onto your skin under studio light.

Coordinate, don't match

Bringing your partner or kids? Pull two or three colors from the same soft palette and let everyone wear a different piece within it. Matching outfits can feel staged; a shared palette feels like a family.

The finishing touch

Want the full experience? Professional hair and makeup is available as an add-on for studio session, and it's already included in my Bump-to-Baby Bundle. so you arrive, relax, and simply enjoy being photographed.*

*Hair and makeup is not available on location shoots.
