What to Expect During Your Family Photography Session

What to Expect During Your Family Photography Session

If you have never had professional family photos taken before, or if it has been a while, it is completely normal to wonder what the actual session experience looks like. What am I supposed to do? Will there be a lot of stiff posing? What happens if a child melts down? I hear these questions before almost every family session, and I want to walk through all of it here so you arrive feeling informed and relaxed rather than uncertain.

How Long Will the Session Last

Session length depends on the package you choose, and each one is designed to make the most of the time available without feeling rushed or exhausting.

  • Mini Family Session 30 minutes. A focused, efficient session that moves quickly and captures plenty of great moments. Perfect for families with younger children who do best with a shorter commitment.
  • Full Family Session 60 minutes. More time for variety, a greater range of setups, and room to breathe if you need a moment to reset between groupings.
  • VIP Family Session 90 minutes. The most relaxed and comprehensive option, with time for multiple setups, outfit changes, and extended family groupings without feeling like anyone is being rushed.

After your session wraps up, plan for an additional 30 minutes or so for your same-day image viewing appointment. You will see your images before you leave and have the chance to choose your favorites and place your order while everything is still fresh.

Can Extended Family Members Be Included

Yes. Extended family is welcome, and the VIP Family Session is designed specifically for larger groups that need more time and more setup options to do everyone justice. If you are planning to include grandparents, cousins, or a larger extended family grouping, please let me know when you book so I can plan the session structure accordingly. Knowing the headcount in advance means I can make sure every grouping gets proper attention rather than trying to figure it out on the day.

Will There Be Posed and Candid Photos

Both. Every family portrait session at my Everett studio includes a mix of guided poses and candid moments, and that balance is intentional. I will walk you through natural, relaxed positions that look good on camera without feeling stiff or overly formal. But I also stay ready for the in-between moments: a child leaning into a parent, siblings laughing at something nobody planned, a look between two people that could not have been directed. Those unscripted moments tend to be the ones families reach for first when they look back through their gallery.

You do not need to know how to pose. I guide every grouping from start to finish. Most families are surprised by how natural the whole experience feels once we get moving.

What Happens if a Child Does Not Cooperate

This is the worry I hear most often from parents booking a family photographer near Everett WA, and I want to be straightforward about it: children not cooperating is a normal part of family photography, not a crisis. My approach with kids is patient, playful, and flexible. I do not need a child to stand still and perform on demand. I work with how children actually behave, and I build in breaks when someone needs a moment to reset.

Some of the best images from family sessions come from completely unplanned moments: a toddler who wandered off and turned back to look, a child who started giggling at something only they found funny, a baby who reached up for a parent at exactly the right second. Letting go of the expectation that everything needs to be perfectly controlled is usually what allows those moments to happen.

If your child has specific needs or tends to need more time to warm up to new environments, let me know before your session. A little context goes a long way in helping me adjust my approach before we even begin.

Can You Change Outfits During the Session

Outfit changes depend on the package you have booked. Here is how each one works:

  • Mini Family Session: The session is designed to move efficiently within 30 minutes, so one coordinated outfit is the way to go.
  • Full Family Session: Includes one outfit change, which adds variety to your gallery and gives you images with a different feel without extending the session significantly.
  • VIP Family Session: Includes two outfit changes, giving you the most range across your gallery and the flexibility to mix casual and more formal looks within the same appointment.

If you are planning around outfit changes, I recommend keeping the changes simple and having everything laid out and ready to go before the session starts. The smoother the transition, the more session time we preserve for actual photography. Coordinating with me will
