What If I Go Into Labor Before My Maternity Session?

What If I Go Into Labor Before My Maternity Session?

Babies keep their own schedule, and yes, there's always a small chance yours arrives before your maternity session. The good news is that a little planning makes this a non-issue for nearly everyone, and even in the rare case labor wins the race, your session isn't lost. Here's exactly how I make sure of that.

Get on My Calendar Early

The simplest protection is timing. Most moms book after 25 weeks, and if you aren't showing to your liking yet, we can always reschedule. The goal is to get you on my calendar early, with room to plan. I aim your session for a window that leaves a real buffer before your due date, usually the earlier side of the 28–34 week range. That way, a baby who decides to come a little early still arrives after we've already wrapped your session and you're admiring your gallery.

If there's any chance of an early arrival, we move it up

If you've delivered early in the past, you're carrying twins or multiples, or your doctor has mentioned the possibility of an early delivery, we simply schedule your session sooner. Tell me your history when you book, and I'll adjust accordingly. Smaller bumps photograph great too, and peace of mind and safety are worth far more than straining your health for a photo.

Your session is a place on my calendar, not a rigid appointment

Feeling wonderful and want to move your session up? Suddenly uncomfortable and want to shift a few days? We adjust. I deliberately keep buffer room in my schedule so rescheduling is simple, not stressful.

And if labor beats us to it anyway

In the rare event your baby arrives before we can shoot, your investment moves with you; you don't lose it. Most often we pivot your maternity session straight into your newborn session, so your time and images carry over. Because I photograph newborns too, that hand-off is seamless: the same photographer, the same true-color style, the same care, simply pointed at the tiny new person instead of the bump. It's never too late for newborn photos, even when the maternity window has passed. We'll talk it through and land on the right path together. If you've booked both a newborn and maternity session as part of a bundle package, your maternity session is moved to a session of the same value you can use within 1 year. Maybe you want to do a family session at Christmas time? Or a cake smash on your baby's first birthday? Both can easily replace the maternity session you missed due to unforeseen circumstances.

A quick word on comfort and safety

Aiming for that buffer window isn't only about beating the clock; it's about your comfort. Very close to your due date, posing gets genuinely tiring, and I'm always mindful not to ask anything strenuous of a body that's nearly ready to deliver. Shooting a bit earlier keeps your session joyful, easy, and relaxed, which is exactly how this milestone should feel.

All it takes is a conversation

A quick text or email is all I need, and we handle the rest together. You have enough to think about right now. Focus on staying healthy, happy, and when you're ready, I'll photograph that.

Ready when you are

The best move is to reserve your date early, ideally in your second trimester. Browse my maternity sessions to start, and if you're planning newborn photos too, the Bump-to-Baby Bundle puts both milestones on the calendar in one step, which is also the surest way to guarantee that, come what may, your story is fully captured. See where it continues on my newborn page.
