What Happens If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?
Why You Should Book Before Your Baby Arrives
The most important thing to know about newborn photography is this: the best time to photograph a newborn is within the first 10-21 days of life. During those early days, babies are still incredibly sleepy, curly, and cooperative. Allowing for those beautiful, peaceful poses you see in newborn galleries. After about two weeks, they become more alert and harder to soothe, and those dreamy newborn poses become much more difficult to achieve. That two-week window goes fast. Which is exactly why I always recommend booking your newborn session before your baby is born, during your second trimester. Trying to get on a photographer's calendar while you're recovering from birth, running on no sleep, and figuring out nursing is a lot. Getting it handled now means one less thing on your list when you're in the thick of those early newborn days. If you are still looking for family photos and your baby is 1-3 months old a Mini session is the perfect answer. Babies at this stage are alert and even smile occasionally. I suggest a mini family session where we capture family photos and a few individual photos of your baby.
A Note for Late Fall Through Early Summer Babies
If you're due between roughly October and June, please don't wait. August and September are the most popular months for newborns in the Puget Sound area, which means my calendar fills up fastest for families due in late summer. But the ripple effect is real, late fall and winter babies often find photographers booked solid because everyone planned ahead during the busy season. Spring babies, too, tend to sneak up on families who assumed they had more time. The simple rule: as soon as you know you're expecting, it's not too early to reach out. I'd rather hold a spot that we adjust later than have a family miss their window because the calendar was full.
How to Book When You Don't Have a Birthdate Yet
When you use my online booking system before your baby arrives, here's what I recommend: pick a session date approximately 10 days after your due date. That gives us a realistic placeholder that accounts for the fact that many babies arrive a little late, and it keeps us within that ideal newborn window. Once your baby is here, all you need to do is send me a message with the birth date and we'll coordinate from there to land on the perfect session day. If your baby arrives early, we adjust earlier. If you need a few extra days to settle in, we adjust for that too. The placeholder date is just a starting point and your actual session date gets confirmed once we know your baby is here and you've had a moment to catch your breath.
What About Early Arrivals?
If your baby surprises everyone and arrives several weeks early, we'll follow your baby's lead and your pediatrician's guidance. Premature babies often need a little more time before a studio session is appropriate, and that's completely okay. I've worked with early arrival families before, and we simply wait until your baby is ready. Your spot doesn't disappear, we work together to find the right timing.
The Bottom Line
Babies are unpredictable. That's part of what makes photographing them so magical and part of what makes planning feel tricky. My job is to make this easy for you. Book your session before your baby arrives, pick a date about 10 days past your due date as a placeholder, and then reach out once your little one is here. We'll take it from there. If you're expecting and ready to get your spot on the calendar, you can book online at ijphoto.net or reach out directly at 425.232.5263.
