How Long Does a Newborn Photography Session Take?
It is one of the first practical questions expecting parents ask when they start researching newborn photographers. And usually, when they hear “2 hours,” the follow-up question is: what on earth are you doing for 2 hours with a sleeping baby?
What Is Actually Happening During a Newborn Session
- Warming and settling. My studio is kept significantly warmer than a normal room. Before I can pose your baby, they need to be in a completely deep sleep, and getting there takes time.
- Feeding breaks. If your baby wakes up hungry, we stop. A fed baby is a sleepy baby, and a sleepy baby is what makes these images possible. Feeding time is built into the schedule.
- Transitioning between poses. Each setup requires unwrapping, resettling, re-wrapping, and waiting for your baby to fall back into a deep sleep before I pick up my camera. A single transition can take 15 to 20 minutes.
- Taking photos. Once your baby is settled and the set is ready, I move quickly. The actual time I spend taking photos is roughly a third of the entire session. Everything else is what makes capturing every angle and little face possible.
- Prop and backdrop changes. Between setups I am swapping wraps, repositioning props, and adjusting lighting. Your baby stays warm and comfortable the entire time.
This surprises almost every first-time newborn parent, but the actual camera-in-hand time taking photos during a full newborn session is roughly a third of the total time. The rest of the session, whether it is a 2-hour Full session or a 3-hour VIP, is built around everything that has to happen before I can even pick up my camera. Newborn photography is not like photographing a toddler or a family at the park. I cannot direct a 10-day-old. I cannot ask your baby to hold still or look at me or stop fussing. What I can do is create the right conditions for them to settle into a deep, comfortable sleep, and then work quickly and carefully once they are there. Getting to that point takes time, patience, and a lot of gentle coaxing. If you are still looking for family photos and your baby is 1-3 months old a Mini session is the perfect answer. Babies at this stage are alert and even smile occasionally. I suggest a mini family session where we capture family photos and a few individual photos of your baby.
Why Rushing Is Not an Option
I have been photographing newborns for 25 years. In that time I have learned that the photographers who try to speed this process up are the ones whose galleries look stiff, whose babies look uncomfortable, and whose parents leave feeling like something was off. The poses that look effortless in a finished image took 20 minutes of gentle, patient work to achieve. Safety is the other reason I never rush. The poses you see in professional newborn photography, the froggy pose, the chin-on-hands pose, the deeply curled setups, require precise positioning and constant attention. I move slowly on purpose. Your baby’s safety is not something I am willing to trade for a faster session.
What About the Mini Session?
My Mini newborn session runs for one hour. Mini sessions are designed for baby-only images, which means less transitioning time and a tighter scope. They are a great fit for families who want beautiful professional images without the full studio experience. Because the pace is tighter, Mini sessions do not include family groupings or sibling photos. If you want all of that, my Full or VIP session is the better choice.
You Will See Your Images Before You Leave
Immediately after your session, I sit down with you for a same-day ordering. You will see your fully edited image previews, choose your favorites, and place your order before you go home. Most families find this is one of their favorite parts of the experience. You are still in the newborn bubble, the images are fresh, and you get to relive the whole session together.
Book Before Your Baby Arrives
The ideal window for newborn photography is within the first 21 days of life, when babies are still deeply sleepy and naturally curled. I recommend booking your session during your second trimester so your spot is secured before your baby arrives. Once your baby is here, reach out and I will confirm your exact session date based on the birthdate. Read more about booking ahead of time here. You can book online at ijphoto.net or reach out to me directly at 425.232.5263. I am happy to answer any questions about what to expect.
