Outdoor vs. Indoor Maternity Sessions: Which to Choose?
Once you've picked your session date, the next decision lands quickly: studio or outdoors? Both create stunning images, but they're genuinely different experiences with different strengths. Here's an honest comparison so you can choose the one that fits you.
What studio maternity photos do best
The biggest advantage of the studio is control. Light, temperature, privacy, timing all of it is decided in advance, none of it depends on the weather. That matters more in the third trimester than most people expect.
- Sculpted, consistent light. Studio lighting is how I create that fine art and old Hollywood look dramatic shadows that trace the curve of your bump exactly the way we plan them. It's repeatable and never at the mercy of cloud cover.
- The full wardrobe is steps away. All 70+ gowns are on site, so you can shoot up to four completely different looks in one session with a private place to change and help on hand.
- Comfort and privacy. Climate control, seating between setups, restrooms nearby, no onlookers.
- Weatherproof scheduling. Your date is your date. In Western Washington, that certainty is worth a lot from October through June.
- Hair and makeup happens in the same place. Add it on and you arrive, get styled, and walk straight into the first setup.
What an outdoor maternity photoshoot does best
Going outdoors trades control for atmosphere and around Puget Sound, the atmosphere is spectacular.
- Movement and scale. Wide landscapes and a breeze creates images the studio simply can't replicate.
- Golden hour glow. The hour before sunset gives soft, warm, flattering light. It does mean shooting on the light's schedule — often an evening session — rather than your ideal time of day.
- Natural, candid energy. Walking, laughing, and interacting with your partner tends to come more easily on a trail than on a backdrop. If posed portraits make you nervous, outdoors can feel more like a date than a photoshoot.
- Bringing your own wardrobe. We will work together to find outfits that fit the location and the time, but away from my studio, we won't have access to my wardrobe.
Maternity photo locations around Seattle and Everett
You don't have to hike for a great backdrop. Within a short drive of my Everett studio we have forested parks with tall evergreens and ferns, beaches and waterfront along Puget Sound with driftwood and big-sky sunsets, and gardens that shift with the season blossoms in spring, warm tones in fall. When we plan your session, I'll match the location to your outfit, your due date, and how far you want to walk. Late in pregnancy, "five minutes from parking" is a legitimate selection criterion, and I treat it as one.
The practical deciding factors
- Choose the studio if you want to use my studio wardrobe, guaranteed weather, maximum comfort, hair and makeup on site, or that polished, editorial look.
- Choose outdoors if you want PNW scenery, golden-hour light, a candid feel, use your own clothing and you're comfortable being flexible on timing, including a backup date if the forecast turns.
- Consider your week. At 25–32 weeks, an outdoor session is usually easy. Closer to 36, most clients are grateful for the studio's comforts.
- Season matters. June through September is prime outdoor season here; the rest of the year, the studio removes the gamble.
