What is a First Look

A question I often hear is, “what is the first look?” The answer is simple. A first look is a pre-planned and private moment between the couple or a family member before the ceremony where they see each other for the first time on their wedding day. The idea is to give the pair an intimate space to share their feelings and get some candid photos in the process. Now this can sound a little weird at first, but compared to the more traditional idea of the groom not seeing the bride until she walks down the aisle there are a lot of advantages. Here are just a few:

Logistics

By planning a first look you don’t have to leave guests during the cocktail hour for photos. You end up doing all of your wedding portraits when you look your best and when the excitement is running high. You are then free to enjoy the reception without interruption. I suggest but don’t require a first look for all of my customers because it keeps the day on time. It also gives you more time for photos, and eliminates the stress and challenges of fitting a lot of photos into a small window of time.

More Personal

I tell my couples that the first look is a great chance to share with your partner the feelings you would want to share during the ceremony but don’t get the opportunity to. It’s also a great ice breaker for photos. Nothing makes me happier than when a couple cries a little during this moment. When you do the first look, you can feel free to express yourself in a way that you might be nervous to do in front of all of your friends and family.

Two Different Feelings

I’ve asked couples I have worked with in the past that were hesitant about doing the first look but chose to do one anyway what their thoughts we after the wedding was over. Everyone I asked agreed it was the right choice. Each, in their own way, described two separate feelings. There was a nervous excitement and immediate tension relief during the first look. Then at the ceremony, there was again a feeling of excitement, but it was different than the first look. The feeling during the ceremony was more akin to “Wow, we are doing this!” Both moments were special but also different.

Have it Your Way

No matter what you choose, remember it’s your wedding and that you can do what feels best for you. Please keep in mind that both options have benefits and drawbacks and plan accordingly.

What is a First Look?

Seeing is believing, so here are some photos showing the first looks between father and daughter and couples.
