What If my baby won't sleep during the session?

What If My Baby Won't Sleep During the Session?

It is one of the most common worries expecting parents bring to me before their newborn session, and I want to address it directly: a baby who will not sleep is not a problem. It is a normal part of the process, and it is something I work through with families at almost every single session.

Newborns are unpredictable. That is not a sign that the session is going wrong. Just the reality of working with someone who is brand new to the world and has no idea what a photography studio is. My job is to create the conditions that help your baby settle, and to stay patient and flexible until we get there.

Why Babies Sometimes Struggle to Sleep During a Session

There are a few common reasons a newborn might have a harder time settling. A new environment with unfamiliar sounds and smells can keep a baby more alert than usual. A growth spurt can mean your baby is hungrier than normal and needs to eat more frequently. Gas or digestive discomfort can make it difficult for a baby to relax no matter how warm and cozy the studio is. Sometimes there is no clear reason at all, and your baby simply needs more time than expected to wind down.

None of these things are your fault, and none of them mean the session cannot produce beautiful images.

What I Do When a Baby Needs More Support

I have been photographing newborns for 25 years, and soothing babies is as much a part of my work as taking photos is. When a baby is having a harder time settling, here is what the process looks like:

Feeding comes first. If your baby is hungry, we stop everything and you feed your baby. There is no rushing through a feeding to get back to the session. A full baby is a sleepy baby, and a sleepy baby is what allows for the calm, peaceful images you are hoping for. I build extra feeding time into every session precisely because this happens regularly.

Warmth and motion help. My studio is kept warm throughout your session, which helps recreate the comfort of the womb. When a baby needs more soothing, gentle rocking and swaying are often what finally tip the scales toward sleep. I do this as part of the session, and I am happy to walk parents through it as well if your baby settles better in your arms than in mine.

We take breaks without apology. If your baby needs a longer stretch of cuddling before they are ready to be posed, we take that time. There is no point in the session where I look at the clock and push forward before your baby is ready. The session is built around your baby, not the other way around.

What Parents Can Do

Your presence and your calm matter more than you might realize. Babies are remarkably attuned to the people who care for them, and a parent who feels relaxed and confident sends a signal that everything is safe. I will do everything I can to make the studio feel calm so that you can focus on your baby rather than worrying about the session.

If your baby settles better with a specific hold or a particular kind of motion, tell me. You know your baby better than anyone else in the room, and I want that knowledge to be part of how we work together. The best newborn sessions are ones where parents and photographer are working as a team, reading the baby and responding to what they need in the moment.

Will We Still Get Good Images?

Yes. Even on the fussiest days, I come away with images that families love. Some of the most beautiful newborn portraits I have ever taken were from sessions where the baby took a long time to settle. The patience that goes into those sessions shows in the final images, and the relief and joy on a parent's face when their baby finally drifts off is something the camera captures beautifully too.

If you have questions about what to expect from your session, I am always happy to talk through it. You can reach me at 425.232.5263 or visit ijphoto.net to book your session or learn more.
