The ideal window for newborn photography is 10 to 21 days. During that time, babies sleep deeply, curl naturally, and settle into poses in a way that produces the classic, peaceful images most families are hoping for. That window is real, and I always encourage families to book during pregnancy so we can plan around it.
But life does not always cooperate with ideal windows. Babies arrive early or late. Recovery takes longer than expected. Families move their session date because something came up, and suddenly their baby is three or four weeks old. If that has happened to you, please do not assume the opportunity has passed.
What changes after the first few weeks is not whether beautiful images are possible. What changes is how I approach the session. Babies who are three to four weeks old are becoming more alert, more opinionated, and less inclined to hold a deeply curled pose for an extended stretch. That means I adjust. Wrapping techniques change. Prop selections shift toward setups that work with a baby who is awake or lightly sleeping rather than deeply settled. Styling choices are made with your baby's actual age and temperament in mind rather than a standard newborn template.
The result is a different kind of image, but not a lesser one. A baby who opens their eyes and looks directly at the camera at three weeks old gives you something a deeply sleeping newborn simply cannot.
Session dates can be moved and adjusted when you communicate with me early. In many cases, what feels like a missed window is actually still workable, and I would rather talk through your options than have a family skip the session entirely because they were not sure it was still worth it.
If your baby is genuinely past the newborn stage, there are other milestone sessions worth considering as your baby grows. But for families whose babies are in that four to six week range, a conversation is always the right first step.
