Dan Manning of Dan Manning Photography asked me if I wanted to shot a Diablo Lake Elopement with him and I honestly answered, “Why the hell not?” (I was feeling a bit snarky.) Later, I came to find out that several years before I had photographed our bride’s senior photos! I haven’t done Senior Photos since 2011, so I was surprised to hear that not only was it a former client but it was one I remembered! Mara’s sweetness, lovely face, and her crazy dog had left an impression. (Her dog escaped the studio and we had to chase it down several blocks!) I was overjoyed to see her again. More importantly, I was excited to help capture her marry the love of her life, Aaron.
Diablo Lake Elopement
Our first stop during our shoot was the Diablo Lake Overlook. There you can see the dam in the distance and the beautiful lake below. The trees, tall grass, and mountains made for a stunning landscape for this happy pair to bind their hands and their hearts into one. Aaron’s younger brother performed the ceremony and his parents acted as witnesses. Their vows were heartfelt and personal. It was magic to watch them share their love in this beautiful place.
This shoot was blessed with perfect light, and some magic too. After the ceremony, we photographed the couple around the overlook then headed to the lake below to photograph them in the woods and on the beach. On the beach, we came across a driftwood t-pee that someone had created. I LOVED this and wanted to photograph them instantly in it. Dan was kind enough to indulge me. At this point, the light was fading fast and we rushed off the Diablo Dam. Even though the gate was locked, Aaron and Mara were happy to walk down the road to get some more photos. On the dam, the spray from the water rushing down the cliff side and the wind made for some epic dress in the wind action. I loved the photo below that shows the spray and her dress both being tossed by the elements.
What a great opportunity it was to work with a friend and fellow pro and reconnect with Mara on such a happy day. Aaron and Mara, I wish you all of the best in your life together. Thanks for letting me tag along!
